IPPro Patents

The State Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO) has signed a patent prosecution highway (PPH) agreement with the Brazilian National Institution of Intellectual Property (INPI).
SIPO commissioner, Sheng Changyu, and president of INPI, Luiz Pimentel, met in Beijing on 13 November and agreed to launch a pilot programme for the PPH on 1 February 2018.

PPH agreements allow patent offices to request fast-track examination in the partner country after a patent application has been granted in the home country.

Changyu commented: “The new memorandum of understanding captured the latest features and demands of IP cooperation between China and Brazil.”

He said: “It will promote development of IP systems in the two countries, provide quality services to users from both countries, elevate IPR protection and public awareness … We will further strengthen cooperation, discuss the path and direction, promote deeper development and make contributions to economic and social development of two countries.”

Pimentel added: “China is the biggest trade partner and export destination country for Brazil, IP cooperation between China and Brazil will have an important impact on the economic and social development of two countries.”

The Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) has reached multiple PPH agreements with various countries over recent months, including Japan, Europe and the US. It also has agreements with Latin American countries that are part of the PROSUR group.
